International Standard Driver Training Track at Werahera

    May 14, 2015

The government has undertaken to construct a driver training track of international standard at a cost of Rs.100 million at the Motor Traffic Department Werahera Office premises and it is also proposed to construct vehicle parking area at the premises.

The foundation stone for the project was laid by Internal Transport Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara recently.

Practical tests to obtain driving licenses issued by the Motor Traffic Department are conducted on a district basis and accordingly the practical tests relevant to Colombo district are conducted at the Werahera Office. The Werahera Office receives about 10,000 applications a month and currently practical tests are conducted on the main road. Conducting practical tests on the main road is a difficult task and in comparison to other countries is in a primitive state.

Therefore the construction of a Driver Training Track and the Vehicle Parking Area at Werahera Office Premises of the Motor Traffic Department has been identified as a prime task. Once this track is constructed, all practical tests will be conducted on this track. For a population of 20 million, Sri Lanka has about five million vehicles and around 170 licenses are issued per day at the Werahera office. Cabinet approval was obtained for this project in two weeks considering this as an urgent project.
