Colombo, the commercial hub and capital of Sri Lanka, will go up to the 21st position in the top 50 World Container Ports list 2014 with the operations of the new berths of the Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT). Earlier Colombo was in the 32nd position in the Top 50 Wprld Container Ports list.
Deyata Kirula Exhibition parallel to the Deyata Kirula Development Program 2014-2015 paving the way for rapid development in the Districts of Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Ratnapura will be hled in Kotawila, Matara in a land extent of 144 acres and at Mahinda Rajapaksa Vidyalaya premises in Meddawatta, Matara which has a land extent of 24 Acres.
The Ministry of Finance and Planning Annual Report for the year 2013 reveals that the total public sector employment has increased by 60 percent in year 2013 compared to 2003 while cadre utilization increased from around 77 percent to 91 percent. This increase was mainly due to the removal of restrictions on public service recruitment and filling vacancies as well as creation of new cadre positions to accommodate emerging needs.
The Government of India will be constructing a Cultural Centre at Jaffna. A Memorandum of Understanding for implementation of the project was signed by the High Commissioner of India Y.K. Sinha and the Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development, Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka. The MoU was signed in the presence of Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development. The Cultural Centre is to be built in the next 36 months, on a plot of land adjacent to the Jaffna Public Library, made available by the Jaffna Municipal Council. The Centre and the adjoining water body - the Pullukulam will be transformed into an integrated cultural space that can also accommodate open-air performances with the help of a floating stage.
Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals recorded a growth of 20.3 % in May 2014 compared to the same period in year 2013. During the month of May, 2014 recorded 90,046 tourists arrivals in the country compared to the 74,838 arrived in May 2013 which is highest in foreign tourist history for month of May .
