Five schools in the Polonnaruwa District, namely Thopawewa Maha Vidyalaya, Kaduruwela Muslim Central College, Vilayaya Maha Vidyalaya, Diwulankadawela Maha Vidyalaya and Bakamoona Mahasena Maha Vidyalaya were recently designated National Schools, at a ceremony held under the patronage of North Central Province Governor Sarath Ekanayaka.
