    Renovated BIA run-way opens

    April 07, 2017

The renovated run-way of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was fully opened yesterday (6th April) for flight operations.

The run-way was renovated at a cost of USD 50 million. The width of the run-way has been increased from 60 meters to 75 meters with the renovation. This will enable to operate A-380 air buses as well.

The run-way has been renovated using the Netherland technology and the lighting system uses LED bulbs, which helps to carry out aviation operations even during adverse climatic conditions. It will also save about 80 percent of power, the authorities emphasized.

The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva and the Deputy Minister Ashok Abeysinghe.  UL-1162 was the first fight landed on the renovated run-way.
