Cabinet papers banning the sale of cigarettes within a 500m radius near schools have been sent to the Cabinet of Ministers, Health Minister Rajitha Senarathne said.

He added that the government has taken steps to discourage the sale and use of cigarettes.

“Already, the young generation is moving away from smoking. In such a situation, the tobacco companies are eying the school children. By taking such a step, we will be able to save the school children”, said the minister.
