    Landslide warning issued for three districts, sluice gates of 5 reservoirs opened Featured

    The Disaster Management Center states that the landslide warning issued by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) for Kurunegala, Kegalle and Ratnapura districts is still valid. Assistant Director of Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili requested the residents to leave the area immediately after seeing the signs of a landslide.


    Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) the said the sluice gates of Rajanganaya, Angamuwa, Tabbobuwa, Kukule Ganga and Deduru Oya in the Kurunegala District are still open and cautioned the people in areas downstream of the reservoirs to be vigilant for floods.The Disaster Management Center says that the water levels of the Kelani River at Nagalagam Street, Hanwella and Glencos measuring stations have reached watch levels due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the Kelani and Attanagalla River areas during the past 24 hours.
    People living in the low-lying areas of Kelani River and adjoining lowlands are urged to be vigilant.The Attanagalu Oya Dunamale water gauge site has also reached flood levels. Accordingly, residents in Negombo, Ja-Ela, Katana, Minuwangoda, Gampaha and Attanagalla areas have been warned to be vigilant of floods.
    The Meteorology Department meanwhile announced that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Central provinces and in Galle, Matara and Anuradhapura districts.Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere after 1.00 p.m. while fairly heavy falls about 75 mm can be expected at some places in Uva province and in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Ampara and Batticaloa districts.
    Fairly strong gusty winds up to 50 kmph can occur in the Northern Province.Heavy showers may occur at some places in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Mullaitivu via Kankasanthurai and in the sea areas extending from Galle to Batticaloa via Hambantota and Pottuvil.The sea area extending from Mannar to Mullaitivu via Kankasanthurai and sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be fairly rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times.
