    November 10, 2019

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched a 3-year programme to train Science teachers, with an allocation of Rs 40 million for the purpose, following revelations that Science teachers lack training, particularly in teaching Practicals. For starters, Rs 15 million has been allocated to commence the project from this month onwards. This programme is mainly to improve Science skills of students up to GCE (O/L).

“Our investigations reveal that Science teachers have the theoretical knowledge, but due to their inexperience in practicals the students were handicapped,” an MoE official said.He said that, particularly in the outstations, some teachers were only giving explanations, when they should be conducting practicals. He said that some of the schools they had sent portable labs to, did not use them.

Under the proposed training programme, an 8-day training programme will be provided to the teachers by the respective Zonal Education office.“We expect the students to have a better knowledge in Science subjects after the training programmes are concluded,” he added. He said the MoE also intends to test and assess the knowledge in Science of A/L students to determine a programme for teacher training.
