Fasting not allowed for any reason during silent period - EC Chairman

    November 14, 2019

Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said that fasting will not be allowed for any reason during the election silent period which commences from midnight yesterday (13). He added that the Election Commission had issued a written notice to the acting IGP to stop any person from fasting during the silent period and vacate places where hunger strikes are taking place.

"Some people take turns and fast alternately. That would be damaging to one candidate while another would benefit from it," Deshapriya said at a press conference held at the Government Information Department this afternoon.Accordingly, Ven. Dr. Inguruwatte Sumangala Thera who commenced a fast at the Independence Square in Colombo few days ago demanding SLPP presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to prove that he has renounced his US citizenship is also expected to end his protest today.

All election campaigning for presidential candidates will come to an end at midnight Wednesday marking the beginning of the 48-hour silent period before the presidential polls on November 16.
