    Newly appointed Secretary of Defence Major General Kamal Gunaratne has stressed that citizens should not have any undue fear that the recent political change in the country would herald in political revenge, abductions or disturbances in Sri Lanka. He said this in a statement which was released by the Ministry of Defence after his appointment as the Secretary of Defence on Wednesday.“The acting Inspector General of Police has been informed that in the coming days duties must be carried out with greater concern,” it said.

    The release also said that all Senior DIGs in charge of divisions across the country, SSPs, SPs, ASPs and OIC’s of Police Stations will be responsible for the security of the country. The new secretary of defence also urged the people to carry on their lives as normal. “According to the vision of the President all necessary steps have been taken so that everyone can live peacefully without ethnic, religious and political differences,” the release said.He also said that law enforcement has been directed to take stringent action against any individual or groups acting in a manner to disrupt the peace.
