Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s Message on the International Day of Sign Languages

    September 23, 2021

The Day of Sign Languages formally acknowledges the linguistic identities of sign language users worldwide. Sri Lanka recognizes the day to support and protect the linguistic

identity and cultural diversity of all people with hearing-impairments and other sign language users.

I understand that “Sign Language of Sri Lanka” created for all ethnic groups in this country is also evolving with the passage of time and benefiting all in need. As a government, we
have always open to give the hearing impaired the strength to work with the general public without any discrimination.

The Government has instructed relevant institutions to improve the facilities for the users of Sign Languages.

May the voices of over 70 million people with impaired hearing abilities be equally heard and acted upon by the society on an equal footing as they well deserve!
