25 Abandoned Vehicles in Jaffna Made Motorable Again

    November 05, 2021

Providing greater mobility facilities for 24-hour alert troops, causing no extra costs for state coffers, the Army’s Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) troops after overhaul, repair and overall refurbishment enabled a fleet of 25 abandoned vehicles in Jaffna motorable again on Wednesday (3) after replacing all necessary spare parts as per directions of the Army HQ.

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army in Jaffna as the Chief Guest for the distribution was invited to symbolically distribute the refurbished fleet, inclusive of 10 buses, 5 trucks, 3 Unicorn buffels, 5 motorbikes, 1 tractor and 1 cab among selected Divisions, Brigades and Units in the Jaffna peninsula.

General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders and Commanding Officers of Jaffna-based Divisions, Brigades and Units accordingly received those refurbished vehicles of high quality and standards from the day’s Chief Guest at the brief ceremony.

The project got to a start a couple of months ago after Major General Jagath Kodithuwakku, Commander, SF-J inspected the 4 Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
central workshop in the Jaffna peninsula where on the spot instructions were given to the workshop troops to make those idling vehicles motorable again as soon as possible with minimum possible costs.

Accordingly, those heavy vehicles after repairs had trial runs and found that they are in perfect condition and sound form, fit to undertake smooth moving operability.

General Shavendra Silva handing over those vehicles in a symbolic gesture thanked the SLEME troops for their exemplary contribution which would set a very positive example to all in the face of decreasing foreign exchange and costs, associated with such imports for vehicle repairs.

Major General Jagath Kodithuwakku, Commander, SF-J, Commander, FMA-N, General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, 4 SLEME Commanding Officer and Senior Officers in the Jaffna peninsula attended the occasion.
