Sri Lanka reserves today as Voters' Day to encourage public to register for voting Featured

Election Department has declared First of June as the Voters' Day to raise awareness among public on the need to register for voting.

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said the measure is aimed at protecting the voting rights of the qualified citizens. Democratic rights will only be protected by free and fair elections, he emphasized.

All citizens qualified for voting must register in the voters' list in order to be able to vote. Applications to register voters will be distributed to their homes from tomorrow and tabulating of voters will be concluded on the 15th of July, the Election Commissioner said.

The measure is aimed to prevent the insertion of false information to voters' list, he added.
