June 09, 2015

State Minister for Child Affairs Rose Senanayake said poverty and lack of proper education of parents had been the main cause of child labour. She called upon the society as well as the schools with adequate financial resource to lend a helping hand to underprivileged children.

She made this request during an awareness programme organized by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) yesterday (8)  to commemorate the World Day Against Child Labour.

A walk commenced at 8.00 am from the Independence Square and concluded at the BMICH. as part of its awareness programme.

Winners of an all-island trilingual essay competition  on child labour were awarded prizes.  The contest was sponsored by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

More than 1,600 children and also many governmental and nongovernmental institutions participated in the programme.
