Workshop for Journalists on the use of flawless Sinhala Grammar

The Government Information Department under the leadership of an eminent panel of resource persons conducted a workshop for media personnel and school children who wanted to brush up their Sinhala grammar and writing skills, at its auditorium on Tuesday (09).

 
Under the leadership of the Director General of the Government Information Department and Head of the Sinhala Unit, University of Peradeniya Darshani Gunatilleke, Prof. J. B.Disanayaka, former Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Thailand and Professor emeritus of Sinhala, University of Colombo, Prof.Ratnasiri Arangala, Senior Lecturers Senarathne Kariyawasam and Dr.Sandagomi Coparahewa were the resource personnel.
 
 
Dr.Darshani Gunatilleke delivering the keynote address, said that it is the responsibility of the Journalists to use the language correctly and thus inculcate correct language skills among the younger generation.  She further noted that Journalists are the people who develop language. That is why journalists should be given proper language in language.
 
 
Addressing the workshop, Prof.J.B.Dissanayake said that no society can exist without rules and regulations and likewise  language exists on regulations.  He pointed out that the punishment  for breach of regulations is severe than for breach of law.
 
 
Being able to communicate your ideas effectively is both a learned and practiced skill any journalist should possess. Journalists represent the public as a whole and they should serve the public as a whole, not factions or special interests, Senior Lecturer Senarathne Kariyawasam said.  
 
 
Senior Lecturer Dr.Sandagomi Coparahewa explained on phrasing method for Sinhala Language.  
 
 
 Prof.Ratnasiri Arangala enlightened on communication, pronunciation and the damage of using unsuitable words
