    Action taken to minimize dengue deaths

    Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake told Parliament today that his ministry has done its duty by reducing the number of deaths from Dengue disease in the first quarter of 2014 with compared to the corresponding situation in 2012.


    The Deputy Minister said the public too had an active role to play to bring down the dengue disease.

     
    Minister Dissanayake responding to a question raised by UNP National List MP Eran Wickremaratne today said that action had been taken to fight the disease in the regional level by a Presidential Task Force and Inter-Ministerial Committees. In 2012 there had been 181 dengue deaths while in 2013 the figure had come down to 89 and during the first quarter of this year the number of deaths caused by the disease was 14.


    Continuous campaigning and increased awareness among public had resulted in the drop of deaths and the spread of the disease had been arrested, the Deputy Minister said adding that from 2012 to 2014 the first and second highest number of dengue cases were reported from the districts of Colombo and Gampaha respectively.
