President to attend Anti-Corruption Summit in London

    May 05, 2016

President Maithripala Sirisena will leave for London on May 11 to attend the Anti-Corruption Summit organized by the British government.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who will host the landmark international summit in London on May 12, has extended an invitation to President Sirisena when the two leaders met at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Malta last year.

The summit, a first of its kind, will bring together world leaders, business and civil society to agree a package of practical steps to expose corruption, punish the perpetrators and support those affected by corruption and drive out the culture of corruption wherever it exists.

The summit will seek to galvanize a global response to tackle corruption. As well as agreeing a package of actions to tackle corruption across the board, it will deal with issues including corporate secrecy, government transparency, the enforcement of international anti-corruption laws, and the strengthening of international institutions.

The President will also visit India on May 13 on an invitation extended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
