    July 10, 2014

The Government has taken action necessary to protect environment and the UNP should not forget the fact that over 200,000 acres of forest had been destroyed by expediting the Mahaweli project, Petroleum Industries Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told Parliament on Wednesday.

The minister said so while participating in the debate on two regulations under the Marine Pollution Prevention Acts Nos 1 and 2.

The Minister pointed out that Sri Lanka was among the nations that discharge lowest amounts of Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere. The highest volume of carbon dioxide is discharged to the atmosphere by the US, the country the UNP describing as the role model. Our officials are alert on the latest developments in the environment sector. Sri Lanka’s forest coverage is more than 25 percent of the land extent. We should remind you the stories, criticism against the Mattala International Airport we are hearing today were very same to what your predecessors had said about the Katunayake Airport some decades ago.
