    President joins National Nutrition Walk Featured

    A National Nutrition Walk and an Exhibition was held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday (19).

     

    The Walk was organized by the National Nutrition Secretariat and Industrial Technology Institute in line with the national nutrition month to raise awareness among the general public on improving nutrition for better health.

     

    President Rajapaksa joined the walk at Bauddhaloka Mawatha. The walk started from the Industrial Technology Institute, and proceeded through the streets of Colombo and arrived at the exhibition at the Institute at Bauddhaloka Mawatha in Colombo.Minister of Technology, Research and Atomic Energy Patali Champika Ranwaka, Secretary to the Ministry Ms. Dhara Wijethilake and Chairman of the Industrial Technology Institute Prof. Wimaladharma Abeywickrema also joined the President for the walk.

     

    The 32 stalls of the exhibition, organized by the Food Division of the Industrial Technology Institute, displayed food technology and nutritious products of small and medium scale entrepreneurs who have obtained assistance and advice from the Institute,

     

    Working long hours, eating unhealthy fast food for convenience, with little time for  exercise; the stresses of modern day life are the trending lifestyle for Sri Lankan families.  Therefore obesity and non-communicable diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are on the rise.

     

    Therefore the Government is of the opinion improvement of nutrition of all age groups and segments of the population up to the required level needs intervention not only from the health sector but also from stakeholders from other sectors  too.

     

    Accordingly aiming to promote and create public awareness on a healthy lifestyle the Exhibition was organized.
