‘Safeguarding independence while maintaining friendship with all is our foreign policy’

    August 06, 2014

The government’s foreign policy is to safeguard country’s independence while maintaining friendship towards all and enmity towards none diplomacy, said Project Minister of Highways, Ports and Shipping Rohitha Abeygunawardena in parliament today (06).

Minister Abeygunawardena participating in a debate on a motion moved by the opposition at the time of adjournment of the House said it was wrong for the opposition to hurl allegation that the government had no foreign policy. “The opposition blames the government for UNHRC passing resolutions against us. Had we gone before the UNHRC on our knees betraying the independence of the country, the resolution would not have passed against us.”

The minister said the UNP could not win the war against terrorism as it had been swayed to the pressure from India and other nations. “President Mahinda Rajapaksa could win the war without offending any nation. Those who try to teach human rights today are the ones who violate those rights of others. Ours is a government with a backbone, thus we could win all the threats coming from the international front too,” the minister said. (Special Reporter/HC)
