    Sri Lanka President's Media Division today rejecting a recent news story published by a local media outlet about a drought-affected family so destitute that they consumed boiled moringa leaves as their daily meal as false and urged the country's media institutions to practice responsible journalism.Media reports have published that a couple in the Galenbindunuwewa area in the Anuradhapura district had no food for several days and they were sustaining on boiled moringa leaves.

    President Maithripala Sirisena, who paid special attention to the news, advised a committee appointed by him to immediately investigate the matter and according to the investigations it was revealed that the media reports have been published without verifying the accuracy of the information.

    During the inquiries of family members and neighbors, it has been revealed that although the people in the area have been severely affected by the drought prolonged for three years, the family is not poverty stricken to rely on boiled moringa leaves for sustenance.

    The investigations have revealed that the family has received the drought relief and other assistance provided by the government to the drought-affected people in the area.Also since the head of the household Mr. B. Piyasena is a kidney patient, he has also received the relief for kidney patients and Samurdhi allowances.

    It has also been revealed that Mr. Piyasena owns seven acres of land including two acres of land, two and a half acres of land in Mahadivulwewa medium Agricultural scheme, two and a half acres of land in Welan Wewa small Agricultural scheme.

    Statements from the officials of the District Secretariat, Divisional Secretariats, Agrarian Services Department, Agricultural Insurance Board, Grama Niladhari, Development Officers, agricultural research assistants and state officials have also been obtained for the investigation and from all the information, it has been revealed that the media institution has distorted the real situation.
