Over 1,800 HIV infected found since 1987

    August 21, 2014

The first HIV infected was reported from Sri Lanka in 1987 from the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital and since then upto now 1,845 HIV infections had been found from the country, Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake said in Parliament today (21).

Responding to a question raised by Anuradhapura District UNP MP P. Harrison, the minister said 60 percent of the reported HIV cases were males. Unsafe sexual relationships, infecting a foetus of an HIV infected mother, sharing unclean syringes by drug addicts would fuel the spread of HIV.

Deputy Minister Dissanayake said that awareness campaigns, clinics to inspect blood samples and many other measures had been taken to prevent the spread of HIV in Sri Lanka. (Special Reporter/HC)
