    President tours drought affected areas

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa participated in an observation tour of drought affected areas in the Moneragala District to witness the measures taken by the Government to assist the drought hit areas.

     

    The President personally observed the purified water supplying mechanism for the drought affected areas. The water supplying program is being carried out throughout the day on the advice of President Rajapaksa.

     

    While on the observation tour, the President directed officials to accelerate and streamline the ongoing drought assistance program. Besides, the President also instructed Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and the Treasury Secretary to provide continuous relief to the people.

     

    The Government will launch a mega scale water supply project at a cost of Rs.5.4 billion as a long term solution to the problems faced by people in areas which are frequently affected by drought.

     

    President Rajapaksa further instructed the Wildlife Ministry officials to take special measures to protect animals in the Yala and Udawalawa National Parks as they are located in the drought affected area.
