    President returns today after successful visit Featured

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned to the island today (29) after successfully completing the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York, USA.


    He also chaired a very fruitful meeting with the US business community during the visit.

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in New York City on September 22 (NY time) afternoon on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa attended a reception hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama and U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday (Sept. 23) evening in New York City.

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa was called the Climate Summit 2014 taking place at the United Nations Headquarters on September 23rd.

    The Commonwealth, currently Chaired by Sri Lanka, has paid particular attention to incorporating the resilience of small states to climate change and natural disasters, and developing innovative proposals on climate finance and the Commonwealth calls for improved prospects for the developing countries to have access to existing funds, President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated in his speech at the Climate Summit 2014.

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressed the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on September 24 evening at the UN Headquarters.

     

    "The role of the UN in advancing international peace, security and prosperity is crucial in the contemporary world. However, in order to gain the confidence and goodwill of the international community as a whole, one of the essential requirements is consistency of standards across the board without any perception of selectivity or discrimination. It is in this context that the current functioning of the system needs fresh examination in order to enhance its credibility." President Rajapaksa expressed in his addressing the UN General Assembly.

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa joined former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the 2014 annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to extend Sri Lanka’s support to the Elephant Action Network that works toward the conservation of elephants, particularly the greatly threatened African elephants.

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa held several bilateral discussions this afternoon at United Nations Headquarters on the sidelines of the U.N. Climate Summit 2014.

     

    The President met with Nepali Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos Calderón and Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma.

     

    The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Mr. Iyad Ameen Madani called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa Thursday (25) morning (New York Time) in New York City. “I will look after the Muslim community like my own brothers,” President Rajapaksa said to Mr. Iyad Ameen.

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa officially handed over Sri Lanka’s US$1 million donation to Palestine when he met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas this afternoon on the sidelines of the 69th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

     

    The Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) hosted a briefing for President Mahinda Rajapaksa 26th morning in New York City.


    While stating in BCIU President Rajapaksa also noted that “peace and stability” in the country is the greatest benefit Sri Lanka can offer to incoming companies and the country is also able to offer a high-skilled workforce.
     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat held talks on Thursday, (Sept. 25) afternoon on the sidelines of the 69th United Nations General Assembly at the U.N. Headquarters while his UN visit in New York.

     

    President Rajapaksa and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral discussions this morning (27th NY Time) in New York City and agreed to work towards further strengthening relations between the two countries.

     

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa and United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon met for talks at the United Nations Headquarters on September 27 afternoon (NY Time). President Rajapaksa invited Mr. Ban to make another visit to Sri Lanka to assess the development since his last visit while the discussion.

Peiris, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva, Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Mr. Susil Premajayantha, Deputy Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Mrs. Nirupama Rajapaksa, Monitoring MP of the Ministry of External Affairs Mr. Sajin de Vass Gunawardena, Members of Parliament Mr. J.R.P. Suriyapperuma, Mr. A.H.M. Azwer and Mr. Neranjan Wickremasinghe, Chief Minister of the Central Province Mr. Sarath Ekanayake, Secretary to the President Mr. Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Mrs. Kshenuka Senewiratne, Secretary Ministry of Civil Aviation Dr. T.R.C. Ruberu and the Director of the Climate Change Secretariat (Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy) Dr. Sunimal Jayathunga also accompanied the President in this official visit from Sri Lanka.
