    President unveils Mahatma Gandhi portrait in commemoration of 150th birth anniversary

    Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today unveiled a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo in commemoration of 150th birth anniversary of the "father of non-violence". The President unveiled the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the Presidential Secretariat and offered floral tributes.

    At the occasion, the President said that arrangements will be made to set up the portrait permanently at the President's office.A commemorative stamp commemorating Gandhi's birth anniversary was also issued with the participation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Temple Trees today.Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu joined both occasions.

    Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. Gandhi led the Indian independence struggle against the British regime, on the basis of nonviolence.Mahatma Gandhi was killed on January 30, 1948, three months after India gained independence. Today, India celebrates not only his 150th birthday, but also the International Day of Non-Violence.
