    Sri Lankan shuttlers emerge group champions

    Sri Lankan shuttlers finished group champions when they beat Ireland 3-2 in the classification round match of the Sudirman Cup Badminton tournament played at Guangxi Sports Centre Nanning, China. It was a fine come back for Sri Lanka after losing first two matches, mixed doubles and men’s singles . Ireland started with mixed double and men’s single matches wins but Sri Lankan Kavidi Sirimannage was the player of the day winning women’s singles to turn over the game for Sri Lanka. She also won the deciding women’s double game with Thilini Hendahewa to seal the victory

    . Hendahewa and Sirimannge once again produced a superb display to win a three setter game . First set Sri Lanka pair won with out much effort 21/15 but second set finished with close battle and Irish pair won with 24-22. However in the third set Hendahewa and Sirimannage produced superb display to finish the game 21/ 17 to emerge Group 3 champions after hard fought victory Earlier Sri Lankan mixed double pair Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa started the game and made good battle against Ireland pair Sam Magee and Chloe Magee . Dias and Hendahewa won the first set 22-20 but Irish pair well controlled the game with winning second and third sets 21/16, 21/17 to win the game . However Sri Lankan experienced shuttler Dinuka Karunaratna was disappointing losing his single game against higher ranked Nhat Nguyen in straight sets 12/21, 18/21 .At this stage Ireland got off a good start winning both matches to lead 2-0 .
    However Kavidi Sirimannage came back strongly in the women’s singles match winning in straight sets over Kate Frost 21/12 , 21/7 to get first victory for the Sri Lanka side . Sri Lankan men’s double pair Sachin Dias and Buwaneka Gunatilleka once again had a superb game to beat Ireland pair Sam Magee and Nhat Naguyen 2-1. Dais and Gunatilleka lost their first set 17/21 but they fought back strongly to win the second and third sets 21/16, 21/11 to level the game 2 all .

    Earlier Canada defeated France 3-1 to emerged Group 2 champions in their classification round math.Meanwhile China defeated Denmark 3-1 while Thailand made 3-1 win at their quarter finals and China and Thailand will meet the semi final today . The second semi final Indonesia will battle with Japan. Japan defeated Malaysia 3-0 in the quarter finals while Indonesia had a tough fight to beat Chinese Taipei 3-2 to qualify for the semi finals yesterday
