    International Film Festival Colombo 2014 begins on Sept.2

    The International Film Festival Colombo 2014 ( IFFCOLOMBO2014) will commence tomorrow (02).

    The International Film Festival Colombo 2014 ( IFFCOLOMBO2014) proudly announce that Christophe Gans’s Franco-German romantic fantasy film based on the traditional fairy tale Beauty and the Beast (La belle et la bête) will be screened on September 02,2014 at Regal Cinema, as the opening film of the IFFCOLOMBO2014. The festival will wound up with Prasanna Jayakody's film "28".

     

    The International Film Festival of Colombo is the first major international film festival to be held in Sri Lanka. The festival, showcasing films from a variety of countries and varied cinema disciplines, will take place in Colombo from September 2, 2014- September 7, 2014.

     

    IFFCOLOMBO is a collaboration between the OKINAWA INTERNATIONAL MOVIE FESTIVAL of Japan and the Film Directors’ Guild of Sri Lanka. During the festival, Colombo will play host to a number of renowned personalities in the international world of cinema. The first of its kind, the festival hopes to attract a new culture of film goers, filmmakers and critics from all over the world.

     

    This film (Beauty and the Beast) was screened out of competition at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival and was released in France on February 2014.

     

    The story of the film which is based on 19th Century France revolves around a bankrupt merchant who exiles himself to the countryside with his six children. Among them is Belle, his youngest daughter, who is pure of heart. One day, during an arduous journey, the merchant stumbles across the magical domain of the Beast, who sentences him to death for stealing a single rose. Thereafter, the tragic story begins. However, at the end, Belle manages to release the Beast from his curse armed with her courage. In doing so, she discovers true love.(KH)
