    The government has received the cabinet approval to introduce a fertilizer subsidy scheme for paddy farmers using organic farming methods. The subsidy will be granted from the Yala season of this year.Under the earlier method of granting fertilizer subsidy to the farmers in the form of cash, which was being implemented from the 2016 Yala Season onwards, the rice farmers had the option of using the cash subsidy to buy chemical fertilizer or organic fertilizer for their cultivation.

    The prevailing disaster situation due to the adverse weather is currently declining gradually, stated the Disaster Management Center (DMC). However, the water level of the Kelani River on the water gauge in Nagalagam Street has gone up to warning levels, last midnight (26).

    Heavy rainy condition in the south-western part of the island is expected to reduce temporarily from today. Fairly strong gusty winds about 50kmph can be expected over the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces. Light showers will occur in Mannar and Jaffna districts.
