    President Maithripala Sirisena said he will use his powers to place his signature to execute the death sentence on traffickers sentenced to death for drug offences. This will be enforced on convicts who continue to operate the drug racket from their prison cells.

    Police powers will be granted to the Tri-Forces by law for two years to help the Police in eradicating the drug menace in the country.A joint Cabinet paper submitted by President Maithripala Sirisena in his capacity as Defence Minister and Public Administration and Law and Order Minister, Ranjith Maddumabandara has pointed out that while the Police and Police Narcotics Bureau did a commendable job in apprehending drug related crime, the worsening drug situation in the country required assistance from the Tri-Forces.

    At least 262 houses and 2 buildings were damaged within in the Colombo District due to strong winds this morning (11), according to the Disaster Management Center (DMC). DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili damages to houses by strong gust of winds have been reported from 8 major cities in the Colombo District.

    President Maithripala Sirisena in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has granted a one year’s service extension, to Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake as the Commander of the Sri Lankan army.
