    Government aims to make Colombo more people friendly – Minister Ravi Karunanayake Featured

    Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake stresses that the government will soon embark on a plan to develop Colombo as a more people friendly city. The Minister points out that the proposed plan will be implemented in collaboration with the Police, Municipal Council, Urban Development Authority and most importantly with the support of the people.

    The Minister made these comments during an awareness raising meeting on the proposed programme with the officials of the relevant institutions held at the Finance Ministry recently. Deputy Inspector General in charge of Colombo Gamini Mathurata, the OICs of police stations as well as councilors of the Colombo and Kandy Municipal councilors and senior officials of the Urban Development Authority were in attendance.


    Matters pertaining to the security of the Colombo North urban zone, security of the people residing at Punarjeewana multi-storeyed housing schemes, the Crow Island and surrounding areas were also discussed. It was proposed to set up police posts for each 500 residencies in the area to ensure safety and security of residents.


    The progress of activities conducted with the assistance of police to minimize environmental pollution on either side of the banks of the Kelani River and the measures taken by the Traffic Police to ease the traffic congestion were also discussed. Minister Karunanayake also stressed the need for enlisting the contribution of three wheeler drives and bus crews for the programme being implemented for the security of the city and the eradication of drug menace.
