Govt to hold a parliamentary debate on the international investigation

    June 11, 2014

The government has decided to hold a debate in parliament on the international investigation mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to probe alleged human rights violations during the last phase of the conflict.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent party of the government has taken this decision during its central committee meeting held yesterday evening at Temple Trees under the patronage of the President.

The ruling party has also decided not to respond to the request of the UNHRC to send delegates to Sri Lanka to conduct the probe until the parliamentary debate.

The SLFP Central Committee after considering the national importance of the matter had decided to seek the views of Parliament regarding it. Therefore it had been decided to consult the Government’s other coalition partners and for House Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva to request Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa for a debate on the matter.
