The World Health organization chose Sri Lanka as the host country to celebrate this year's event and thiss is the first occasion an international blood donors' ceremony is conducted in a South Asian country.
A number of events will take place at today's ceremony including issuing of a commemorative stamp to mark the event, felicitation of one thousand blood donors and mobile organizers, launch of Short Message Service (SMS) donor management system. Awards also will be presented to the winners of the poster exhibition held among school children.
According to the Director of the South East Asian region of the WHO Dr.Mrs.Poornami Ketrapel Singh the blood requirement in the South East Asian region is 18 million units and in the year 2013 nearly 400 thousand Sri Lankans have donated blood. She said a significant feature in Sri Lanka is that all of them have donated blood free of charge.(KH/SI)
