Release of fishermen will further boost SL-India Relations - Fisheries Minister

    March 29, 2014

The Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan authorities for violating Sri Lankan International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) have been released on the President's directives.

This decision taken by President Mahinda Rajapaksa  to show Sri Lanka's gratitude to India for abstaining from voting on the resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions, in Geneva on March 28  will further  strengthen relations between both countries, said the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Navy has initiated immediate action to facilitate the repatriation of remaining 98 Indian fishermen and their 28 fishing trawlers in Sri Lankan custody.
