    Sri Lanka observes World Population Day 2014

    The World Population Day was observed by communities world over on July 11. The United Nations Population Fund this year celebrates World Population Day 2014 on the theme "Investing in Young People"  is calling for investments in support of the largest-ever generation of youth.

    Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest at World Population Day celebration organized by UNFPA in Sri Lanka  at JAIC Hilton on July 11.  


    UNFPA in Sri Lanka has looked at Sri Lanka as a success story in investing in young people through a policy study and publication entitled “Generation Youth: Yielding the Returns on Investments”. The publication portrays eight young successful Sri Lankan role models in the areas of entrepreneurship, health, nature conservation, peace building, education, music and cricket to showcase how the country has yielded returns on investing in its large youth population aged 15-24, who comprise 16% of Sri Lanka’s population.


    Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka, Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development, diplomats, government officials, University Lecturers also participated at this occasion.(KH)
