Workshop on “Social Reconciliation and the use of Media”

    July 24, 2014

It is time that we examine whether media plays its role to bring about social justice and democracy said Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.

Most  of the media organizations are highly commercialized and attempt  to fulfill the aspirations of their owners. In some instances criticism is leveled at personal level, which reflects doubt in our minds about the role of social media. Minister of Mass Media and Information made these observations, participating at a Workshop on “Social Reconciliation and the Use of Media” held at the Government Information Department on Wednesday (23),

The Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media Information also speaking at the occasion said, media has the responsibility to ensure justice and fair play in society.  Media plays a leading role in the development of society and it is the duty of every media person to be conscious of this fact and perform their duties accordingly.

Dr.Charitha Herath further said, “We are living at a time when society looks forward to a bright future and media is so closely connected to our lives. It is time to think anew on national development and progress as well as progress in our lives.  We are discussing a topic that is very important to our country.”

He also added, “Our history has enough examples of clashes at various times and places in our country.  Any society has problems but some people want to make them issues.”

“Most clashes are now over and social reconciliation is in sight.  Media is ingrained with knowledge, wealth and power which necessitate in-depth thinking”, Dr.Herath further emphasized.
