    Navy on Standby to apprehend illegal fishermen in North Seas - Milita

    Military spokesman and Director of the Media Centre of the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya speaking at a press conference said that the Sri Lanka Navy are on standby position to apprehend illegal fishermen in Northern seas.

    He made this statement while answering a question raised by a journalist at a media conference held at Media Centre of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development today (30). Furthermore he said that nearly 4000 fishermen are fishing in the Palk Strait per day and some fishermen illegally cross over the Sri Lankan waters and exploit the marine resources. There are 94 Indian fishermen remaining in custody and daily more than 500 fishermen are turned back by the Navy', he added.

     

    During his concluding remarks Brigadier Wanigasooriya said that the Navy would take rapid action in the event  they forcefully or illicitly cross over the Sri Lankan waters. (SDF/KH)
