    Imported potatoes, onions up

    August 12, 2014

As local potato and onion of the Yala season harvest would come to the market from next week onwards the government has decided to revise special commodity levy on imported potato and onion as a measure of protecting the local farmers.

Accordingly the special commodity levies on imported potatoes and onions would be increased by Rs 10 per kilo and Rs 15 per kilo respectively. The tax increase on potato would come into effect from August 15, while the increase on onion was from Tuesday (12), Ministry of Finance and Planning sources said.

The special commodity levy on imported potatoes was at Rs 10 and with the revision it would be increased to Rs 25, while the special commodity levy on onions would be increased from Rs 5 to Rs 15 with the tax revision.

The tax revision would provide relief to the local farmers and its impact on the consumers would be minimal, they said.  (Special Reporter)
