Problems faced by Lankans in Iraq not due to war

    August 14, 2014

Minister of Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella said that around 282 Lankans serving in Iraq had confronted some difficulties and problems to continue their jobs following a trade union dispute.

Addressing weekly post-cabinet press briefing today (14), the minister said that those Lankans were not stranded there as a result of ongoing war in Iraq as it had been reported by certain sections of media early. These Lankan workers had been deployed to serve in an airport in Kurdistan in Iraq.

Following the complaints from their relatives the government negotiated with organizations responsible and got those workers reinstated, the minister said adding, 37 of those Lankans expressed their willingness to return to Sri Lanka. Of them 27 had already arrived in Sri Lanka and action was in progress to bring the remaining 10 back home, the minister said. (Special Reporter)
