Grand Ceremony to Pass Out Tamil Women Recruits Featured

    August 24, 2014

Sri Lanka Army's Security Forces Headquarters East yesterday (23rd Aug) marked another turning point by taking the salute of 36 recently-enlisted Tamil woman soldiers who passed out during a colourful Passing out Parade at 22 Division, Trincomalee.

The 36 Tamil women recruits of 5(V) Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (SLAWC) were passed out on successful completion of four months training at 5 (V) SLAWC. Brigadier R Shanmuganathan graced the event as the Chief Guest and the Commander Security Forces (East) Major General SAAL Perera participated as the Guest of Honour.

Apart from the scheduled military training, they received Sinhala and English language proficiencies, computer literacy and self-employment awareness. During the training period they were also taken on field journeys where they had the joy of visiting different places in the country.

Trophies were awarded to the best overall performances during the session. In addition, with a view of providing them with an easy mode of transport, eight scooters were also distributed among the outstanding recruits by the Commander Security Force (East) Major Gen. Perera.

Direct recruitment of Tamil women en bloc as woman soldiers to the Sri Lanka Army amply confirms the fact that the Army, contrary to allegations, made by some quarters, does not discriminate on ethnicity as such when it matters to recruitment of soldiers to the organization.

A luncheon shared by these new recruits with their parents and well-wishers culminated the day's proceedings.

Religious Dignitaries, Government Officials, Senior Military and Police Officers were also present at the event. (MoD)
