The Buddhasasana and Wayamba Development Ministry has taken measures to implement a three-pronged programme, Shasana Suraksha to protect and foster the Buddha Sasana, said Buddhasasana and Wayamba Development Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera. Speaking at a media conference yesterday at the Government Information Department, Minister Perera said the Shasana Suraksha programme consists of the introduction of a life insurance scheme for Bhikkus (Budu Puth Suraksha), implementation of a programme to provide assistance for the parents of Bhikkus (Budu Puth Mau Piya Suraksha) and development of facilities at temples in rural areas (Bodu Arama Suraksha).

The Minister said Cabinet approval has been received for the implementation of this programme and Bhikkus who have not benefitted under any insurance facility provided by the government or private sector will be benefitted under this programme. The launch of the Sashana Suraksha programe will be held on June 26 at Temple Trees under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe with the participation of the Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikayas.

Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera said Theravada Buddhism is a cultural heritage of Sri Lanka and there is a great demand internationally for Theravada Buddhism, especially in Western countries. Talented and well-educated Bhikkus are required to teach the essence of Buddhism for those who are willing to follow the path of the Buddha.

“There is a huge demand for Tamil-speaking Bhikkus especially among the Tamil community since they are willing to follow the teachings of the Buddha. The Buddhasasana Ministry has already taken measures to ordain members of the Tamil community as Buddhist monks,” he said.

The Minister said they have also taken measures to hold pirith chanting at 6oo temples islandwide on June 22 to invoke blessings on the country and its people. In line with this programme, a pirith chanting ceremony will be conducted on the same day at Ruwanweliseya from 6.00 pm onwards, with the participation of 500 Bhikkus.
