    Kataragama Esela Peraheras begin today Featured

    The annual Esela Perahera of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya will commence today.The perahera will parade streets at 7.34 pm, Acting Basnayake Nilame Dilruwan Rajapaksa said.The ‘Walking on fire’ ceremony will commence today and about 500 devotees will take part in it.The Randoli Perahera will be held on July 16. The Esela festival will end with the water cutting ceremony on July 17.

    This is a religious festival celebration done annually in Sri Lanka to mark the arrival of the God of Kataragama (God Murugan/Skanda in Hinduism) and to mark the occasion of his union with local Goddess Valli in this holy land many 1000s of years ago. This festival embraces the sacred rituals of Firewalking, Kavadi and Thooku Kavadi (iron hook suspension ritual) and more.

    This is a truly unique cultural experience and is embraced by people of all faiths as they come to Kataragama on a pilgrimage. This event is free and the Maha Dewalaya of Kataragama will be providing free alms giving meals to all devotees and attendees throughout the Perahera time
