PM wishes to provide insurance cover for self-employed Featured

    October 22, 2019

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that steps will be taken to provide insurance coverage for the self-employed.Addressing a meeting of the United National Self-employed Traders Association at Gunasinghepura, in Pettah today, the Prime Minister stressed the need to protect not only large scale entrepreneurs but also self-employed traders. The Premier said his aim is to provide facilities to the smallest social unit unlike in the Rajapaksa regime, when the economy was distributed among a certain elite level.

Speaking to the traders at the Pettah market, the Premier said the SLPP presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa invited all big business in Colombo, to the Shangri-La for a meeting but without improving the economy of the small man the country's economy cannot move forward."The Difference between them and us is that we believe the economy of the country can be developed only if the small man's economy is improved. That's what JR Jayawardene did with creating the open economy. Ranasinghe Premadasa was the one who built the place in Colombo for the small man to conduct their businesses."

He further said that after 1977 with the open economy policy small traders in Colombo thrived. However in 2014, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa evicted all the traders from the area and sold the land to "Shangri-La People". "I ask you, do you want to go there again? Or protect this and develop further? Do you want to hand over the Colombo city to those who demolished the houses and evicted the people?".The Premier requested the people to vote for Sajith Premadasa to protect the small traders and people in Colombo.
