The multi-provincial food festival is being organized aiming at promoting the time preserved and ancient food culture of the Sri Lanka.

The food festival will feature different forms of food that is unique to each province including common food items. This will be an ideal opportunity for local as well as foreign travellers who visit Matara to taste mouth-watering traditional food items on offer and explore more on it.

The initiative to organize the food festival was taken by the Commander of the Army in keeping with Secretary Defence's concept of providing opportunities to the youth to display their hidden innate talents.

The unique feature of this event will be the demonstration of the varieties of food cultures of the Island. It is also expected to develop the innate skills of the soldiers and improve their rapport with the public.

Army expects that it will help to revive fast dying indigenous dishes and educate public on its preparation, nutritional values, and the importance of preserving it for posterity. Food items prepared at the Matara Beach front during the session will be sold at a concessionary rate for schoolchildren.

Army bands and calypso teams will keep the crowds entertained throughout the duration of the food fiesta and a booklet on culinary and table habits will also be released at the inaugural ceremony.(MoD/kh)
