    President inspects landslide affected areas in Haldummulla

    President Mahinda Rajapaksa who made a visit to the Koslanda, Haldemulla this morning inspected the landslide-affected areas.

    The President has emphasised that the government will take measures to safeguard the future of children who lost their parents in the tragedy.

    He has also instructed the relevant authorities to speed up the process of extending relief to the affected families, which are being jointly carried out by the army and the police with the assistance of private and voluntary organizations.


    Rescue operations in Meeriyabedda was re-commenced this morning by army, police and residents of the area. Sri Lanka Airforce continued to assist the DMC in rescue operations with50 Airmen detailed from Duyathalawa, one Bell 212 from Nuwara Eliya and one MI 17 from Ratmalana.


    According to the Disaster Management Centre around 120 liner houses have been completely swept away by the landslide and around 150 are believed to be trapped under the rubble. Altogether nearly 800 persons displace are currently being housed at Koslanda Tamil College and at the Poonaga 


    Clearing of the Poonagala and Koslanda roads have also commenced. (KH)
