    Today is World Television Day

    A ceremony to mark World Television Day will be held today at 4.00pm at the Royal College Hall.  T.B.Ekanayake, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Art and Dr.Keheliya Rambukwella, Minister of Media will be the Chief Guests. Veteran Actress amd MP Dr.Malini Fonseka will also participate.

     

    While the main speaker on this occasion will be Dr.Tudor Weerasinghe, Rector of the Sreepali Campus, University of Colombo, the Secretary to the Ministry nof Media Dr.Charitha Herath and prominenet Media personality Mohan Samaranayake will alos address the meeting.  This is the first occasion the World Television Day is celebrated in Sri Lanka on a national scale.

     

    Dr.Edwin Ariyadasa and Mr.Aruna Selladurai will be given a once in a life time award for their service in the cause of media education.

     

    Creative Directors of short films and the author of the best literary work on TV for the year 2013 will also be given due recognition.  Awards and certificates will be given to winners of the island-wide essay competitions to mark World Telelvision Day.

     

    The United Nations’ (UN) World Television Day is observed annually in many places around the world on November 21. The day recognizes that television plays a major role in presenting different issue that affect people.  The first World Television Forum was held in 1996 and the UN General Assembly proclaimed Nov.21 as World Television Day and  The UN invited all member states to observe the day by encouraging global exchanges of television programs focusing, among other things, on issues such as peace, security, economic and social development .

     

    The UN realized that television played a major role in presenting global issues affecting people and this needed to be addressed.  The UN acknowledges that television can be used to educate many people about the world, its issues and real stories that happen on the planet. Television is one of the most influential forms of media for communication and information dissemination. It is used to broadcast freedom of expressions and to increase cultural diversity.  (NJ/KH)
