Security Forces personnel only involved in development projects

    December 18, 2014

Since the end of the terrorist conflict the security forces have been involved in many development projects in many parts of the country. In order to assist these work the army recruited more than 20000 skilled personnel ie. masons, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, welders, painters etc. to assist the security forces in these development projects.

Refuting allegations of involving security forces personnel on menial duties the Director/Spokesman of the Media Centre Brigadier Ruwan Wanigsooriya said that security forces personnel are involved in many development projects but are not required to discharge duties that go beyond their official obligations. There are skilled workmen who have been recruited for those purposes. Security forces personnel are involved in development projects on supervisory and managerial capacities.

He made these remarks during the weekly press briefing held at the Media Centre on Wednesday (17th December).

Responding to a query he said that security forces are deployed in the North and East for national security purposes and to ensure safety of the civil populace. They have never acted in a way detrimental to the interests of the people he stressed.

Commenting on a recent incident where certain medias have accused the security forces of assaulting a civilian, he said that the incident had occurred between two civilian parties and there had been no involvement of the security forces in anyway. As usual it is a baseless allegation against the security forces. The suspects have been identifies and the assault has been carried out based on a personal issue. One of the suspects is said to be employed in the private sector.

Informing on the progress of the rebuilding work of houses and shops affected by the communal violence in Aluthgama and Beruwela he said that out of the 223 houses affected 210 houses have been renovated and handed over and work on the remaining 13 houses are in progress. 74 shops have been already handed over after the completion of work with only 9 remaining to be handed over.
