The 5.8 million votes are not MR's personal vote - Nimal

    February 13, 2015

The 5.8 million votes received by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa are not his personal votes. Any member of the SLFP contesting has a wide vote base. It is not a personal vote, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva has told the Daily News yesterday.

According to the Opposition Leader, 'it is true that the former President Rajapaksa had charisma and was a majestic personality and he was in the minds and the hearts of the people' but that is only one aspect.

That does not mean that the SLFP and other parties in the UPFA have lost their vote base. Therefore I think (may be with good intentions) some parties are trying to bring him back as the Prime Ministerial candidate.

The opposition Leader said he was confident of the assurance given by the former President that he will never break up the SLFP because he is a product of the SLFP.

His father together with S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike crossed over together and formed the SLFP. "I do not think his son who got the benefit of the SLFP to become the Leader of the Opposition of Sri Lanka, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the President of Sri Lanka twice as a result of his belonging to the SLFP and through the SLFP vote base, will be a party to destroy the SLFP victory at the next General Election. So therefore I am confident that he will not be a party to venture," he added.
