    New Polio vaccine gets positive public response

    The new Injectable Inactivated Polio Vaccine ( IPV) for four months old infants introduced under Sri Lanka's Expanded Immunization Programme ( EPI) is progressing well with a positive response from the public.

    Chief Medical Officer Public Health, Colombo Municipal Council Dr Ruwan Wijeyamuni who revealed this further said that over 90% of ante natal mothers in the city has visited the 16 CMC run Maternal and Child Health Clinics.

    Dr.Wijeyamuni said circulars giving clear instructions on the procedure to be followed had been issued to these clinics by the Director General Health Services, Dr P.G. Maheepala ahead of the commencement of the programme . Accordingly the clinics are maintaining special fridges designed to store the vaccine at the correct temperature given to them by the Family health Bureau.

    According to the Head of Epidemiology Unit Dr Paba Palihawadana no side effects of IPV had been reported.

    Sri Lanka has not reported any cases of Polio since 1993.
