Chennai drowns in deluge of water, flight services suspended

    December 02, 2015

Continuous rains since the early hours of Tuesday has led to the breaching of 35 major lakes, mostly in the southern parts of the Chnenai Metropolitan Area, rendering thousands of residents homeless. There was also a complete breakdown of essential services, The Hindu reported.

Fresh rains in the southern Indian city of Chennai have caused serious flooding, with trains suspended and hundreds of people without power. Flights from the city's airport have been indefinitely suspended after flood waters entered the runway and tarmac areas on Tuesday evening.

Southern Railways has cancelled all major train services to southern districts including 12 express trains on Tuesday and six on Wednesday. More cancellations are expected as the Tambaram station is cut off from the main lane connecting the Egmore station, the main station in the city originating trains bound to south.

.The army has been deployed to rescue thousands of stranded people after two days of heavy rains.
