Both countries also reaffirmed their shared commitment in working towards intensifying engagement at multilateral fora on issues of mutual interest, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.The First Session of the Sri Lanka-Finland Bilateral Consultations at senior officials’ level was successfully concluded on 1 October at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo.
The Sri Lanka delegation to the Bilateral Consultations was led by Sumith Nakandala, Additional Secretary (Bilateral Affairs) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, while the delegation of Finland was led by Ambassador Kimmo Lähdevirta, Director General for the Americas and Asia of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. The visiting delegation also included Roving Ambassador of Finland for South Asia, concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka, Harri Kamarainen. Senior officials of both Foreign Ministries participated in the discussions, with several line Ministries and agencies representing Sri Lanka also contributing actively.
The deliberations broadly focused on bilateral trade and investment and followed up on the progress being made in existing areas of cooperation, including vocational training, health, renewable energy, ICT and digitalization, which had been identified by both countries during the visit of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to Finland in October 2017.Other areas of discussion aimed at enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation through exchange of expertise and joint collaborative programmes, included e-governance, critical communications, cyber security, climate change and mitigation, forestry, defence, tourism and the development of smart cities.
The modalities and substantive matters with regard to the implementation of the MOUs in the areas of vocational education and training, health and digitalization, signed between the two countries in June 2018 during the visit to Sri Lanka of Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland Petri Peltonen, were also discussed at this meeting.
The Second Session of the Sri Lanka-Finland Bilateral Consultations will be held in Helsinki, Finland in 2020, the statement said.
