    Sri Lanka earns Rs. 39 Bn fromFish Exports in 2017, Featured

    In 2017, total fish and fishery export amount of Sri Lanka was reported to be 24,827 mt (Metric Tonnes) with an export value of Rs 39. 2 billion whilst Ornamental Fish exports earned Rs 2.2 billion during the same period, the latest data outlines. Latest annual review of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development notes that the lifting of EU fish ban in June 2016 paved the way to 7,550 mt of fish exports marks the prospects of gradual stabilization of the Sri Lankan fish exports industry.

    The total fish production during 2017 recorded to be as 531,310 mt showing an increase of 0.07% in contrast to the fish production during the previous year. This increase was made possible due to the contribution of 449,440 mt and 81,870 mt of fish production respectively generated by the marine and inland sectors, according to the Ministry. Fish consumption is paramount as a high source of protein in enhancing the nutritional condition of the public and developing the good health of Sri Lankans.

    Even though per capita fish consumption in 2016 was 43.4g per day, it has been increased up to 45.4g in 2017. Sri Lankan fisheries sector mainly consists of 517,000 km sea area enriched with abundant fish resource and 489,000 hectares of lagoons, estuaries and reservoirs that show high potential for development.
